ABC honored with Citation at AIA Portland Design Awards

ABC’s project for the Lubavitch Foundation of British Columbia received a Citation in the "Unbuilt" category of the 2011 AIA Portland Design Awards. The awards jury included Merrill Elam, AIA, Lisa Iwamoto, and Vanessa Kassabian. The project is currently under construction and will be completed in early 2012.

The 1%: Design for the Public Good

ABC organized and curated the architecture exhibition, THE 1%: Design for the Public Good. The exhibition featured work by Pacific Northwest architecture firms who are strengthening nonprofits through pro bono design and have made a pledge to public service through THE 1%, a nationwide program of the San Francisco-based nonprofit, Public Architecture. The program connects nonprofits with architecture and design firms willing to give of their time pro bono. The exhibition's opening night included a panel of designers and nonprofit clients discussing the value of pro bono service and the program. ABC serves as the Portland, OR Design Advocate for the program.

ABC begins design work on new event center

ABC has begun design work on a new event center for the Pyrenees Vineyard and Winery in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. An existing 1959 barn will be rehabilitated to house the new 4,700 sf facility, which will include a 200 person event space, visible barrel storage, tasting bar, and support spaces. A portion of the building will continue serving as equipment storage for the vineyard. Stay tuned for more design updates.

ABC selected for San Francisco Film Museum Facility Needs Study

The San Francisco Film Museum has selected ABC to lead its facility needs study. The planning study will define the vision and future needs of the institution by looking at spatial and functional requirements, site alternatives, cost, organizational structure, implementation, and conceptual design. The work will be conducted over the next twelve months.

"Towards a Critical Practice", University of Oregon, Department of Architecture

ABC Principal, Brian Cavanaugh, spoke at the University of Oregon's Portland campus on Wednesday, January 26. His presentation, "Towards a Critical Practice" addressed the topic of building a critical architectural practice in the 21st century and the recent work of the firm.
