ABC Team

Architecture Building Culture (ABC) is a small firm with big ideals.  We see architecture as an instrument for improving the world.  We believe that buildings and landscapes should uplift the lives of those who live and work in them, while positively contributing to the neighbourhood and wider community.

Our Story

ABC was founded in 2010 by Mark Ritchie (NZ) and Brian Cavanaugh (USA). The team at ABC utilises their international background by blending imported ideas and principles with the Pacific Northwest architectural traditions and environment.

ABC offers a full range of professional services and has expertise that encompasses a wide array of building types including cultural, civic, mixed-use/commercial, educational, multi- and single-family housing, and hospitality.

Current work includes various projects in Canada, the United States, and the South Pacific. These include the recently completed Black Cultural Center on the campus of the University of Oregon; a new residence in Fiji; a new commercial showroom , offices and light manufacturing building in Vancouver, BC; and a number of single family residences.

The work of ABC and its principals, Brian Cavanaugh and Mark Ritchie, has won numerous design awards and been published throughout the world. Most recently, ABC was awarded a 2021 AIA Small Project Award, which is a national award given by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2019, ABC received the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture and in 2014 the AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Emerging Firm of the Year Award. In 2013, ABC was ranked as one of the top 50 design firms in the U.S. by ARCHITECT Magazine (The ARCHITECT 50).

Architecture + Landscape + Interiors

We imagine a building from the inside out and the outside in. We think architecture, interiors and landscape are inseparable. That’s why we do it all.
